Research into Psychedelics Returning to Academia

An interesting article in the New York Times today describes research at Johns Hopkins and other medical centers into the use of psychedelics to relieve depression associated with cancer as well as other medical and psychiatric conditions.  In the piece, one kidney cancer patient relates his experience after taking psilocybin in the study for the first time:

“All of a sudden, everything familiar started evaporating,” he recalled. “Imagine you fall off a boat out in the open ocean, and you turn around, and the boat is gone. And then the water’s gone. And then you’re gone.”

The article cautions that the results, though encouraging, are so far based only on small studies.
