Tox Tunes #36: Dope Head Blues (Victoria Spivey 1927)

December 12, 2010, 1:11 pm

During her long career, Victoria Spivey (1906 – 1976) worked with everyone from Blind Lemon Jefferson to Bob Dylan.  She recorded many of her own songs which, as Wikipedia notes, dwell on “disease, crime, and outre sexual images”.  “Dope Head Blues” features Lonnie Johnson (guitar) and Porter Grainger (piano). The lyrics explore the delusions of success and power that drugs bring on:

Just give me one more sniff of, another sniff of that dope
Just give me one more sniff of, another sniff of that dope
I’ll catch a cow like a cowboy, and throw a bull without a rope
