Townes Van Zandt (1944 – 1997) was a cult figure,  greatly admired by musicians such as Willie Nelson and Steve Earle. He never had a real hit song or album, and his life and career were hobbled by drug use, alcoholism, and manic-depression.  He died at the age of 52 from the effects of his addictions.

Van Zandt’s best-known and covered song is “Pancho and Lefty”:
