Tox Tunes #49: Moonflower [Flor d’Luna] (Santana)

September 5, 2011, 12:15 pm

This is the title cut from Santana’s 1977 double album.  Moonflower (Datura inoxiais a plant with large white decorative flowers that bloom at dusk (hence the name). It is a member of the same genus as jimson weed (Datura stramonium). All parts of the plant contain the anticholinergic alkaloids atropine, scopolamine, and hyoscyamine.

A 2003 report from MMWR described an episode where 14 Ohio teenagers became ill after intentional ingestion of seeds from D. inoxia. Signs and symptoms — mydriasis, tachycardia, hallucinations, and urinary retention — were consistent with anticholinergic syndrome. All 14 youths recovered completely.
