Review of carbon monoxide toxicity misses some key references

Carbon Monoxide Poisoning. Guzman JA. Crit Care Clin 2012;28:537-548.

This is a fairly well done review of carbon monoxide (CO) toxicity, with a rational discussion about what is known and unknown about treatment, including hyperbaric oxygen (HBO). However, there are some significant omissions in the reference list. For example, a key — though flawed — study into the role of HBO in this poisoning is Weaver et al, in the New England Journal of Medicine. This reference is not mentioned at all.

The current issue of Critical Care Clinics has a toxicology theme, and has a number of reviews covering important tox topics. We will occasionally review some of these articles over the next month.

By the way, the CDC recently noted that 263 CO exposures were reported to poison centers in eight states related to Hurricane Sandy.Four of these exposures were fatal.
