The Candiroos

In one of the many exciting projects taking place in association with the SMACC (Social Media and Critical Care) conference taking place next week in Sydney, the international journal club entries have been posted on the conference site. There were four entires from three continents:

  • The UltraSMACCs (USA) – an all-star emergency ultrasound lineup including Mike Mallin and Matt Dawson from the  Emergency Ultrasound Podcast, Laleh Gharabaghian from Stanford, and Mike Stone from Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.
  • We Own the Airway (Australia) – another great lineup from the world of #FOAMed, including Minh le Cong (@rfdsdoc), Amit Maini (@sithlord2004), and Andy Buck (@edexam).
  • Red Hot Chile EDocs  - a group composed apparently of the only ED docs in Chile, who give most of their presentation in Spanish but still manage to be NSFW.
  • The Candiroos (USA) – the gang that did The Poison Review journal club tapes back in the 1990s, reunited for another go at it, including (as pictured above) Tim Erickson, Steve Aks, and @poisonreview.

The following is our entry:

Thanks to Chris Nickson and the entire gang at SMACC and Life in the Fast Lane for putting this exciting project together.

    Hi Guys,

Great talk. I felt like I had to leave a comment! I’m an ED registrar in Sydney and currently am doing a toxicology term with Dr Andrew Dawson (presenting at SMACC next week!).
In an attempt of Barnes-type achievements in advancing my toxicology understanding, I actually managed to get an Irukandli-like syndrome whilst surfing at Bondi, although my efforts were not intentional as per JB et al.
I ended up back in my ED in resus on Morphine (which did nothing) and eventually, Ketamine. The pain was incredible and lasted around 10hrs.
I have looked into it, and although the Irukandji is located mainly to Northern Australia, there are many types of similar Jellyfish that can cause a similar syndrome, with widespread geographical locations around Oz. I have yet to identify the bugger that got me.

    Really enjoy the blog.

    Cheers,

    Mat Oliver

    Matt:

Thanks for the comment and kind words! I very much regret not being able to attend the SMACC conference next week — it will be a pivotal event in the entire #FOAMed movement. Tell Dr. Dawson i said hello.

Glad you survived your encounter with the jellyfish. After morphine didn’t work, did ketamine help?

    Hi Leon,

It was a great SMACC conference. Perhaps next year in Brisbane you can make it!
Ketamine did help, I felt quite dissociated, which in a way was good. A weird feeling though. I definitely have (even more) respect for the nasty things that live here in Oz now.

    Hopefully see you next year!

    Matt:

Followed SMACC2013 on Twitter and look forward to viewing the sessions online. It looked like a great conference. Very much regret not being there and will definitely try to be in Brisbane next year.

Thanks, Sean! The Candiroos are looking forward to doing more podcasts.
