Tox Tunes #79: Muggles (Louis Armstrong)

March 2, 2014, 1:15 pm

In the Harry Potter series, a “muggle” refers to a person without any magical power whatsoever. I’m quite sure Louis Armstrong had something else in mind when he recorded this track in 1928.  It features some magnificent playing, especially by Armstrong on trumpet and Earl Hines on piano. Back in the 1920s, “muggles” was common slang for marijuana, especially among jazz musicians.
